ABOUT SHOW

“Our inner self fills up like a juicy fruit pulp.”

Choreographer and dancer Simona Machovičová, in collaboration with 420PEOPLE, will present her new dance performance, PULPS, which portrays the actual perception and experience of human emotions in interpersonal relationships. The dance duo will feature a pairing of dancers (Simona Machovičová & Jindřich Panský) combined with original live music by Václav Havelka.

“A partnership between two people. Each carries an equal share of responsibility for love, mutual care, respect and knowledge. A balance between two halves. PULPS shows the different stages of a relationship between two lovers, one of whom is a woman and the other a man. In our play, we want to open your perception just enough to make the performers’ gender negligible. So that you might be able to identify with one of the parts of the couple, regardless of gender, but rather based on your own relationship experiences. What have your relationships been soaked in? Have you ever been “drained to the last drop” because you keep coming back despite your common sense objections? Or do you see yourself as the one who (un)consciously drains the other out of love ? Or maybe out of hurtful hatred?” These are the questions captured by the PULPS performance.

The choreography of PULPS conveys the contemporary concept of the meaning of “relationship” and the actual form of emotions. The performance is accompanied by Václav Havelka’s original live music. Fashion designer Martina Machovičová and her brand Mars Industries introduce a new visual dimension to the production.

WARNING: This performance includes very loud music and strobe.

ABOUT AUTHORS

Simona Machovičová

Choreographer and dancer Simona Machovičová (originally from Slovakia) graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava – bachelor’s degree and continued her master’s studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. She completed a six-month international study program at the Peridance Capezio Center dance school in New York. As a performer, in recent years she has collaborated with choreographers in the Czech Republic, namely Lenka VAGNEROVÁ in the performance “Amazonky” (2017, 2018) and “Sorcerer” (2014), which was the result of international cooperation with the German choreographer Felix LANDERER. For Jana BURKIEWICZOVÁ and her group Burkicom she performed in the dance performance “Divočina” (2015, 2016) and “Find the others” (2017). Since 2018 she has been a member of the 420PEOPLE dance ensemble under the direction of Václav KUNEŠ. She performs in the performances “The Watcher” (La Fabrika), “InspiraCe” (Archa Theatre), in the performance “HeArt of Noise” choreographed by Sylvia Šafková (Archa Theatre) and “Why things go wrong” in Studio Maiselovka. She received a wider nomination for the Thalia Awards for 2024 for her performance in her own creation PULPS. At the same time, since 2020 she has been dancing for the French dance company KAFIG under the direction of Mourad MERZOUKI, where she is a performer in the dance performance “Zéphyr”. For her choreographic and interpretative work, she has received awards at festivals: Festival of Choreographic Miniatures in Belgrade in 2014 and 2015 and at the Internationales Solo-Tanz Theater Festival in Stuttgart, Germany in 2015, where she won the audience award. She also created choreography for the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre for the opera by Antonio Salieri “The School of the Jealous” and for several musical productions in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In 2024, she created choreography for the Kampa Museum Summer Stage in Prague for the production named “Forman” directed by Adéla Laštovková Stodolová.

Musician, singer and frontman of the band Please The Trees, has been experimenting recently. After his previous EP, City Fox on Acid (2016), the album Exhale Extender (2019) is another collection that maps the dimensions of the American primitive genre. But unlike the noisy debut, whose sonic palette evoked the collision between wildlife and the rampaging city, the new album feels more like a return to the cave. An organic and expansive guitar meditation, wrapped in a hands-on drone, draws heavily on the giants of the genre and the New York guitar avant-garde. His live music, composed for the Pulps performance, builds loosely on his previous work. In 2025 Havelka plans to release a new solo album, his first in 15 years with many world renowned artists from the American music scene. In 2025 plans a continuation of the fyield / Future Landscapes project and with the band Please The Trees he will compose music for the film documentary Mycocosmos.

She combines unusual materials with functional ones to give things a new life and the product does not lack durability. In this way, she makes her own fashion of the wildest ideas and gives a lot of space to her own imagination.

The contemporary dance company 420PEOPLE was founded by Václav Kuneš and Nataša Novotná at the turn of 2007/2008 after their return from a stint with one of the world’s most prestigious dance theatre companies, Jiří Kylián’s Nederlands Dans Theater. Its name refers to the international telephone code of the Czech Republic. They shared a vision of establishing a contemporary dance company in Prague; thus, 420PEOPLE was born. The company is celebrating 16 years on the Czech and international dance and theatre scene.

420PEOPLE is not only a contemporary dance company but also a “brand” that presents a unique vocabulary of contemporary dance to the public in performances and original choreographies, using a contemporary interpretive and professional approach. Its audiences enjoy a unique originality and an unforgettable artistic experience that the company delivers on stage and online. The artists also engage their audiences in non-traditional dialogue through workshops, online projects, discussions, dance films, documentaries, screenings and other activities that form an integral part of their work.

The company’s creative space for dance, movement and art is Studio Maiselovka, located in the heart of Prague 1 on Maiselova Street. The venue provides opportunities for planning valuable artistic projects, innovative stage formats, lectures by highly qualified teachers and commercial events. The Studio is a hub for culturally oriented residents to meet, understand and approach contemporary dance and movement. From 2022, it will produce dance projects, creating an intimate ambience for the performance. For this concept, 420PEOPLE has been nominated five times for the Thalia Award and won once in 2023.
